Henrietta Lacks (1st August 1920 – 4th October 1951) was an African-American woman diagnosed with an aggressive form of cervical cancer at the age of 30. During her diagnosis and treatment, her cells were passed to medical researchers without her knowledge or consent. Henrietta’s cells, known now as HeLa cells, were the first immortal human cells ever grown in culture. They have changed the face of medical research, contributing to the development of the polio vaccine, the study of cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and much more. HeLa cells have even been to outer space as researchers studied the impact of zero gravity.

In early 2010, Rebecca Skloot published her book ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’, shining a bright light on Henrietta’s experience, speaking to her family and friends, and ultimately becoming a New York Times bestseller. The book stayed on my ‘to be read’ pile for years, but after I read it 2020 I knew I wanted to do something. I got in touch with Susan Myers, Rebecca’s assistant, and asked about the potential for creating a product that could be used to spark conversations about Henrietta as well as to raise money for the Henrietta Lacks Foundation. Now, the Foundation have got their pins, and Jeri Lacks, Henrietta’s granddaughter, has given us her blessing to go ahead. I am delighted! 💛

So team, let’s raise some money for the Henrietta Lacks Foundation! £1 from the sale of each pin will go direct to the Foundation, which provides assistance to individuals and their families who have been directly impacted by research conducted without their consent.

Delivery Information

I post out orders once a week on a Wednesday, this is because I run Little Science Co alongside my full-time job as an academic researcher. This little passion project has grown more than I ever thought possible (thanks to you lovely people!), and I need to put some boundaries in place to ensure that I don’t burn out. If you really need your order to be posted out more quickly, please send me an email (heidi@littlescienceco.com) and I will do my best to help you.

I use Royal Mail to buy postage online, and then I pop all orders in my local post-box to make sure I am minimising social contact as far as possible. Currently, Royal Mail remains open for business as usual, though they are understandably experiencing some delays due to the ongoing pandemic. International orders are also experiencing delays due to Brexit (not my choice… #ScientistsForEU).

At the checkout you will be asked to select either ‘standard’ delivery which is not a tracked service, or ‘upgraded’ delivery which is a tracked service. If you would like to be able to see where in the world your order is between its journey from me to you, please select the upgraded option. Please bear with me through this very strange period – I really appreciate your support and will do my best to make sure that your order reaches you in good time.
